(GREEN BAY, WI) Eighth District Congressional Candidate, Green Bay Physician, and former U.S. Air Force Major Dr. Marc Trager responds to Rep. Kagen’s vote to immediately pull troops out of Afghanistan.
“As a former Major in the U.S. Air Force, I know it is not in the best interest of our country to just pack up and leave Afghanistan,” Dr. Trager said. “We need to finish the job. Our Generals on the ground have told us that the window for winning this war is still open, and by not providing our military with adequate troops and resources we will certainly fail. Allowing Afghanistan to fall back into the control of terrorists is simply not an option.”
Commander of the U.S. forces in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, said in a report to President Obama that “If the Afghan government falls to the Taliban…Afghanistan could again become a base for terrorism.”i
Rep. Kagen was 1 of 65 Members who voted for the bill, which would have compelled U.S. forces to leave Afghanistan before the mission is completed. The bill was defeated 356-65.
“A vote for this bill is a vote to accept failure in Afghanistan,” Dr. Trager said. “I understand what is needed to defend our country and will fight to ensure that Americans are safe both at home and abroad.”

(GREEN BAY, WI) Eighth District Congressional Candidate, Green Bay Physician, and former U.S. Air Force Major Dr. Marc Trager responds to the Transparency Bill proposed by Rep. Steve Kagen.
“Transparency in healthcare prices has been an issue for some time on both sides of the aisle,” Dr. Trager said. “While transparency may lower costs, this bill only serves as a diversion from the real issue: The healthcare bill that Congress is threatening to force on an unwilling public.”
Rep. Kagen proposed this bill on February 25, 2010. The House passed its healthcare bill on November 7, 2009.
“The conversation about transparency is important, but let’s not be distracted and ignore the fact that Congress is threatening to use reconciliation to pass the healthcare bill,” Dr. Trager said. “Rep. Kagen should have called for transparency when the Obama Administration was arranging sweetheart deals for special interest behind closed doors.”

“The purpose of this pledge is to unify the party,” Dr. Trager said. “We must support one another and work together to help defeat Rep. Kagen in November. I urge the other candidates to join me in this effort.”
Rep. Kagen has not officially announced his re-election bid, but is expected to run for a third term in Congress.
“There are only seven weeks between the primary and general election, and the 8th District candidates must unite and put their personal interests aside,” Dr. Trager said. We must keep in mind at the end of the day, the goal is to defeat Steve Kagen.”

(GREEN BAY, WI) Eighth District Congressional Candidate, Green Bay Physician, and former U.S. Air Force Major, Dr. Marc Trager issued the following response to today’s statement by Congressman Steve Kagen regarding the receipt of funds from Congressman Charles Rangel.
“The $21,000 Rep. Kagen received from Rep. Rangel should be returned immediately,” Dr. Trager said. “The people of Northeast Wisconsin should be able to trust their elected representative. As a Radiologist for over 30 years, personal character, integrity and ethical value are the traits I used in my medical practice. I will continue to use these traits as your future Congressman.”
Congressman Kagen recently said, “No amount of money will ever be able to affect my vote.”
“Seventeen Democratic Congressman have already returned funds from Rep. Rangel, and I would urge Rep. Kagen to do the same,” Dr. Trager said. “The people of Northeast Wisconsin need someone they are able to trust, someone to bring discipline, character and honesty back to the fabric of politics.”

(GREEN BAY, WI) Eighth District Congressional Candidate, Green Bay Physician, and former U.S. Air Force Major, Dr. Marc Trager issued the following statement regarding the health care summit called by President Obama.
“We can do better than this trillion dollar bill that will increase premiums on individuals and families, raise taxes on struggling small businesses, and cause many to lose their existing insurance coverage,” Dr. Trager said. “Republicans have offered step-by-step, common sense solutions that will lower health care premiums and increase access to affordable health care without adding to the mountain of debt.”
The President promised that this summit would be a bipartisan discussion where Republicans and Democrats could sit down and compromise.
“What we saw today was Democratic posturing aimed at cramming through an ill-conceived piece of legislation that this country does not want,” Dr. Trager said. “The Republicans stood firm in their calls for limited government and free market solutions, and I applaud their resolve.”
“Rep. Kagen’s recent statement saying he’s open to the Senate using reconciliation to approve the health care bill shows his complete disregard for what the American people want,” Dr. Trager said. “For a Congressman who claims to have written the health care bill, Rep. Kagen’s absence from the health care summit is evidence that he’s out of touch with the bipartisan process.”

(GREEN BAY, WI) Eighth Congressional District Candidate, Green Bay physician, and former U.S. Air Force Major Dr. Marc Trager responds to the continuing lack of fiscal responsibility in Washington.
Congressman Steve Kagen again followed the party line yesterday and voted to raise the debt ceiling by $1.9 trillion.
The measure puts the government on track for a national debt of $14.3 trillion - more than $45,000 for every American.
“The people of the 8th District deserve better, and this reckless spending needs to stop,” Dr. Trager said. “The government now borrows 40 cents of every dollar it spends, and this is unacceptable.”
The Democrat controlled House passed the debt ceiling increase by a vote of 217-212, with every Republican and more than 30 Democrats voting against the measure. Currently, the national debt stands at over $12 trillion. By 2020, the debt will top $20 trillion.
“There is no plan to get out of this debt,” Dr. Trager said. “We much end these irresponsible fiscal practices so that our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are not left cleaning up the mess made by Steve Kagen and the Obama Administration.”

(GREEN BAY, WI) Eighth District Congressional Candidate, Green Bay Physician, and former U.S. Air Force Major Dr. Marc Trager will report raising $50,225 for the quarter ending 12/31/09, with $41,877 cash on hand. The funds were raised from more than 100 contributors.
Dr. Trager announced in November 2009 that he would seek the 8th Congressional seat held by Steve Kagen.
“I am extremely encouraged by the number of people who have chosen to support my campaign,” Trager said. “The enthusiasm and support we have generated in such a short span is extremely encouraging.”
“It’s clear that the people of the 8th District are frustrated with Washington politicians ignoring their voice,” Trager said. “Northeast Wisconsin residents want real change in Washington, and Steve Kagen’s track record of voting for higher taxes, wasteful spending, and unbalanced budgets show his disconnect with the constituents.”

(GREEN BAY, WI) Eighth District Congressional Candidate, Green Bay Physician, and former U.S. Air Force Major Dr. Marc Trager responds to President Obama’s state of the union address.
"I applaud President Obama’s willingness to take steps to energize our economy by eliminating capital gains taxes on small business investment and by putting a partial freeze on discretionary spending,” Dr. Trager said. “But, these steps do not go far enough. Tonight, the President again showed how out of touch Washington is with ordinary Americans. As politicians debate, bicker, and give lip service to bipartisanship and common sense solutions, citizens struggle to find jobs and pay bills."
"Spending needs to be curtailed now, not in 2011, as this financial burden cannot be passed down to future generations. The President and Congress must take responsibility for their reckless fiscal decision making that has added more than a trillion dollars to our debt. Blaming past administrations does not legitimize future irresponsibility."
"We need real reform through limited government and free market solutions to address critical problems such as health care and the failing economy."

"Scott Brown's victory over Martha Coakley yesterday sent a clear message to Congress and the President that the status quo is not working in Washington," Dr. Trager said. "Brown's victory was not a referendum on just the healthcare bill, but a statement by the American people that the leadership is going in the wrong direction. The vote represents a rejection of the closed doors meetings and sweetheart deals brokered by this Congress and the current administration. The people want transparency and openness throughout the legislative process, and Congress must change its course and listen to the people’s plea for fiscal responsibility, lower taxes, and free market solutions for healthcare reform."

The field of Republican candidates seeking to challenge U.S. Rep. Steve Kagen, D-Appleton, has grown to five with Howard physician Marc Trager's announcement that he will run for Congress.
Trager, who served as a major in the Air Force, made announcements Thursday across the 8th Congressional District, in stops to Green Bay, Marinette and Appleton.
"Too many people in northeast Wisconsin are losing their jobs as out-of-touch Washington politicians steer our country in the wrong direction," Trager said in a release. "This election is about the hardworking people of northeast Wisconsin. I am running for Congress to ensure that our future is filled with prosperity.
"Our campaign will target the economic and social issues important to families in the district, bringing new ideas and a fresh approach to the needs of northeast Wisconsin," Trager said.
Trager filed for candidacy with the Federal Election Commission earlier this week.
Other Republican candidates include include Reid Ribble, 53, a Kaukauna roofing contractor; Marc Savard, 47, an organic farmer and Door County Board member; Andy Williams, 41, a lawyer and Brown County Board member; and Kerry Thomas, 44, of Sayner in Vilas County.
A primary election to determine the Republican nominee will be held in September. The election is next November. Kagen is serving his second two-year term in the historically Republican district, which includes Brown and Outagamie and Waupaca counties, among others.
